Substance Abuse
Substance abuse and the use of performance-enhancing drugs have been persistent issues among athletes, presenting concerns in three primary areas: Performance Enhancing Drugs, prescription medications, and mood-altering drugs. Athletes face unique challenges, including distinct temptations, pressures, and availability compared to the general public.

Performance Enhancing Drugs (Steroids):
Driven by the desire to gain a competitive edge, some athletes adhere to the "win at all costs" mentality, with potentially devastating consequences. The difficulty lies in resisting temptation when feeling at a disadvantage due to others cheating. It's crucial to recognize that the damaging effects extend beyond the risk of being caught and banned. The physical risks, including the possibility of death, are significant. Understanding all the facts is essential, as it often leads to an obvious choice.

Prescription Medications:
The life of an athlete often involves enduring pain. The temptation to use pain medications for temporary relief, especially before an event, is ever-present. However, the risk of reliance and potential addiction is a constant concern. Recognizing when the line is crossed into dependence is vital. It's equally essential to understand that no single event is worth putting your body at risk. Seeking proper medical supervision is crucial when experiencing pain, sleep issues, or concentration problems.

Drugs and Alcohol:
The lifestyle of playing hard and living hard can be intertwined for athletes. Peer pressure, coupled with a higher concentration of "enablers," makes drug and alcohol problems more challenging. Coping with these situations requires additional effort for athletes. Coping is a skill that can be learned, and I am here to guide you through the process.
